Emmanuelle Carle has been a member of John Abbott College’s Department of History since 2006. She holds a Bachelor degree in History (Specialization) from Concordia University, as well as a Masters from Université de Montréal and a PhD in History from McGill University. With a FCAR scholarship and a Travel Grant, she moved to Paris to research Gabrielle Duchene (1870-1954), French feminist activist, unionist, pacifist, antifascist, fellow traveller of the French Communist Party and an innovator as a propagandist. Duchêne symbolizes the ideological congruence of these movements. She has published her findings in French History and in the Archives du Féminisme (Université d’Angers).
Emmanuelle Carle has taught at McGill (First World War, Modern European History), UQAM (Histoire des Femmes au 19e et 20e siècles) and at Concordia (Intro and Modern European History and History of France since 1871). At JAC, she teaches Western Civilization and Modern History, but has also taught History of Science and Methodology in the Liberal Arts Department, Learning Techniques (Pathways), Research Methods and Integration to the Social Sciences.

Catherine Humes has been a member of the Department of History at John Abbott College since the fall semester of 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and History/Classics from McGill University, as well as a Master of Arts in the History and Philosophy of Religion from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Education with a specialization in History and Religion from the University of Toronto (OISE). Her interests include the history of religion, gender and social justice, and pedagogy centered on critical thinking and student engagement. André LeBlanc began his university studies in the sciences, taking a B.Sc. in biology and psychology at the University of New Brunswick in 1990. He went on to do his Master’s (1993) and PhD (2000) at the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Toronto.
After completing his PhD, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en science et technologie at the Université du Québec à Montréal (2000-2002) and in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University (2002-2003). In 2004 he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he taught for three years as a visiting assistant professor in the History of Science and Technology Programme at the University of King’s College. In 2010, he spent a month teaching as a visiting professor in the Master en Histoire et Philosophie des Sciences at the University of Bordeaux and has been teaching a seminar on the Historical, Philosophical, and Social Aspects of Science at the Science College of Concordia University since 2011.
Professor LeBlanc joined HEPS in January 2008 and has been happily teaching history, research methods, and the history and methodology of science ever since. He has published in the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences, History of Science, Scientia Canadensis, and the Human Nature Review. His research interests include the nature of the placebo effect, the relationship between science and religion, the role of mind in evolution, and the problem of free will from the perspective of science.

Edward Osowski received his Ph.D. in History from Pennsylvania State University in 2002 with a specialization in Latin American History. While on a Fulbright scholarship, he conducted archival research on colonial indigenous history in Mexico City and has presented his findings at conferences and seminars at Harvard University, UCLA, the Université de Montréal and other institutions. Before joining the faculty of John Abbott College in 2006, he taught at McGill University, Concordia University, and the University of Northern Iowa. In addition to having several publications to his credit, he is co-editor of Mexican History : a Primary Source Reader, forthcoming from Westview Press in 2009. He brings his love of the history of music, myths, and ideas to the courses that he teaches at John Abbott College and believes that students new to history have the ability to do the rigorous work of interpretation, writing, and discussion.

I have been a teacher of History at John Abbott College since 2012. I have a Master’s in History from Concordia University, where my research focus was on 20th century Mexican history. In my graduate research, I looked at ideas about race in the construction of the nation after the Mexican Revolution, and the role that history textbooks have played in diffusing these ideas to schoolchildren. In my work outside the college, I am involved in community work with migrants to Canada, trying to work towards more equitable access to basic services and human rights. I’m passionate about history, and strive to share that passion with my students here at the college.

I have been a member of John Abbott College’s Department of History, Economics and Political Science (HEPS) since 1993. Born and raised in Montreal, I attended Concordia University where I earned a B.A. and M.A., specializing in Russian and Modern European History. For the most part, I teach Western Civilization and Modern History courses, but have also taught Research Methods and Integration in the Social Sciences (ISS). I have been privileged to take students on Historical and Archaeological tours to Europe and North Africa with Professor John Serrati for the last nine years. What I enjoy most about teaching at the College is the everyday interaction with students and members of the JAC community. John Abbott is both a great place to go to school and work.

Jessica Vandervort has been a member of John Abbott College’s Department of History since 2006. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Women’s Studies from McGill University (1994) and a Master’s degree in History from Concordia University (2003). Her thesis examined the diaries of a female adolescent who lived in Victorian Montreal. She teaches in both the History and the Research Methods departments and is a member of the Teaching and Learning Environment and Pathways committees. She helps her students cultivate a more active role in their own learning through participation in classroom workshops and discussions. This social historian believes that “success in the classroom has been attained when students have developed a critical lens and a deep comfort with unanswered questions.”

Minko Sotiron earned a B.A. (1967) University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. (1972) Simon Fraser University and a PhD (1992) Concordia University. He has published a book From Politics to Profit: The Commercialization of Canadian Daily Newspapers, 1890-1920 (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 1994). He has contributed to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, American Historical Review, Canadian Journal of Communications and others. He is currently working on Skulkers, Skedaddlers and Conchies: Draft-dodging since the French Revolution.

Professor Fiona Tomaszewski has been a member of John Abbott College’s Department of History, Economics, Political Science and Classics since 1998. She holds a Bachelor degree in Honours History from McGill University, as well as a Masters in History and a PhD in History from McMaster University. At JAC, Professor Tomaszewski served as the Honours Social Science Coordinator from 2003 to 2012. She also serves as a member of the Library Media Services committee of the College. For many years she was on the Social Science Program Committee. She enjoys teaching the enthusiastic and curious students at John Abbott College.

James (Jim) Vanstone was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario. While majoring in History and Philosophy at the University of Windsor, Jim was elected President of the history society called the Lord Acton Club. Graduating with an Honours B.A. and the University’s gold medal in history Jim went to Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario majoring in “Imperial”, now more popularly called Third World history. He obtained his M.A. (1967) and Ph.D. (1974) from Queen’s. While in Graduate School Jim was a tutor, a graduate assistant and also the editor of the Graduate Review. Doing research for his Ph.D. in Southern Africa (1969-1970) Jim was awarded two Canada Council scholarships. Jim and Bev, his wife, spent a year in Africa and some time at England’s Oxford University’s New College completing the research. Returning to Queen’s, Jim taught Imperial History for one year before going to John Abbott College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue in 1972 where he is teaching history and chairing, for the past twenty years, the History, Classics, Economics and Political Science Department.
Jim was elected a member of the Academic Council of the college in 1974 and elected Chairperson in 1975 being re-elected Chairperson by faculty, administration, students, professionals and support staff every year down to the present time.. He serves on the Academic Programs Coordinating Committee, which developed the college’s Institutional Policy on the Evaluation of Student Achievement (IPESA) amongst other responsibilities.
Each year, since 1975, the faculty has elected Jim, Chairperson of the Faculty Professional Development Committee. It has a mandate and a budget to assist professors become better teachers. From 1979-1985 Jim was elected to serve on the college’s Board of Governors and for four of those years was a member of the Executive of the Board.
Outside of the college, Jim served as a teacher and, for seven years, Superintendent of Ste. Genevieve United Church Sunday School. He served for five years as Chairperson of the Official Board of the church. At the present time, he is a lay representative to Montreal Presbytery of the United Church of Canada and had the distinct honour to be elected Chairperson of Montreal Presbytery from 2000 to 2002 responsible for the oversight of sixty pastoral charges at that time. In 2007 Jim was elected the President of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. At the Annual Meeting of the M & O Conference he presided over the ordination of ten United Church ministers. Jim is also a member of the Board of Governors of the United Theological College of McGill University and is currently the Chair of the Montreal School of Theology of McGill University.
Jim is a member of the Masonic Order and was Master of Meridian Royal Alexandra Lodge #125 in 2001-2002. He is a Shriner and a member of the Karnak Shrine Greeters Unit. At the present time, he is serving as Deputy Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Quebec.

The main area of my research involves the modalities of Roman imperialism and early provinciae. I focus primarily on the mid- and late Republic, looking at Roman provincial administration, the economy, and the non-military expansion of control in conquered territories. Sicily acts as a microcosm for this line of inquiry; here, I concentrate on the role of the island in the Roman Republic and the formation of the earliest proviniciae. Included in this project is an analysis of Cicero’s Verrine Orations. The aforementioned areas cross over with my broader field of study, which involves the examination of monetary and non-monetary capital in the military sphere. My research in this field looks at the role that royal and state economies played in projections of power and in providing rulers and ruling elites the means to wage war.
Other ongoing projects include the reception of classical Sparta in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the perception of space in the early Roman forum, and a greater study of ancient imperialism.

Kenneth (Kyriakos) Matziorinis holds a B.A. degree in Honours Economics & Political Science from McGill University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from McGill University. He is also a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and a macroeconomic forecaster, invited to give his forecasts on the economy and a frequent commentator in the media.
His research interests have been tax incentives for capital investment, the theory of expansion and replacement investment, capital-output specificity and the impact of changes in the composition of output on capital investment, the role of expectations in consumer and investment spending, the economies of Greece and Southeast Europe, the political economy of the international monetary system and the economic history of the ancient world from Classical Greece, through the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
He has taught at John Abbott since 1981 and he also teaches at McGill’s School of Continuing Studies at the graduate management program where he has taught since 1979. Ken is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award (1993, 2006) and the Scarlet Key Award (1975) from McGill University. He has also taught at Concordia University, and the University of Toronto. He has served on the board of directors of the National Bank of Greece (Canada) between 1991 and 2006, on the board of Trafalgar School for Girls (2002-2011) and numerous community organizations. He is currently serving as President of the Canadian Order of AHEPA, the Canadian branch of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, the world’s oldest and largest Greek heritage organization.
He is the author of four textbooks some of which are used in his courses.

Thierry holds a B.Sc. from McGill (maths, physics and psychology). At the age of 26 he discovered Economics and has done all of the course work and Comprehensive Exams for his PhD at McGill. Officially, he is known as an “ABD” (all but dissertation). Maybe one day he will complete his thesis. In the meanwhile, he has written two textbooks that are used and appreciated by his students:

He has been teaching at John Abbott since 1983 and has also taught Macro- and Micro-economics at McGill (MacDonald campus). In 2012, he became coordinator of the Honours Social Science Program. His particular area of interest is how economic theory applies in the real world so as to make it easier for his students to understand the subject. He also enjoys reading history and he believes that to be a complete economist you must also study Anthropology, Political Science, History, Psychology and Sociology as these subjects provide important insights into human behaviour. He has also done research on carcinogens in the workplace and the impact of part-time work on student academic performance. He found that most students can handle up to 15 hours a week without it adversely affecting their grades. Beyond that, there is a marked deterioration in their marks.
Though originally French from France, he spent 15 years of his childhood in the Far East, 11 of these in Hong Kong, and is therefore a product of the British school system. He has seen much of the world and in the mid-70s travelled for two years through Europe and the Middle East with just $2000 in his wallet (lots of hitch-hiking and sleeping on rooftops or in fields…). He is an avid athlete (tennis, soccer, swimming, running) and has run several marathons (Boston and Montreal). He and his wife of over 35 years, Cheri, have also done a lot of bicycle touring in France, Austria, the Netherlands and Vermont. More recently, they have moved to kinder gentler forms of exercise: ballroom and Latin dancing, as well as pilates and yoga, totalling 14 hours a week.
Outside of John Abbott, Thierry was very involved in his children’s school, developing the after-school program of the primary school between 1997-2001. He then created the school’s Foundation and was its first president (2003-2009). He also organised annual class reunions (2006-2010) attracting about 200 alumnae each year, some in their late 70s. He was also a member of the Parents’ Association (1996-2008) and sat on the school’s Board of Directors (2005-2009). With the former, he launched an electronic version of the parents’ newspaper and was its co-editor-in-chief.

Professor Riley joined John Abbott College in September 1991. Her professional career as a financial economist includes work in forecasting currencies and interest rates in the investment banking industry in Toronto as well as teaching in a variety of college and university programs. Her current teaching interests include Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Quantitative Methods and Integration of the Social Sciences.

Avinash S. Samboo holds a B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. in Economics from University of Mauritius, Mauritius. He also studied at Georgia State University, USA and at University of Nottingham, U.K. as a Commonwealth Research scholar.
His research interests have been in Public Finance and Welfare Economics and Political Economy with specific focus on the modeling of the social security budget in a welfare state. His other interests include Growth Theories and Labor Economics. He was also involved on various projects sponsored by United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and African Economic Research Consortium (AERC).
He has been teaching at John Abbott College since August 2006. He has also taught at University of Mauritius, University of Technology, Mauritius and Georgia State University, USA.

Medoune M. Seck is a native of Senegal. He is fluent in Wolof, French, English and has limited working proficiency in Arabic. His skills in the use of technology are current and broad. He has used several instructional technologies such as Camtasia, showme application, and Wacom bamboo tablet to produce numerous instructional videos that are effectively improving the students’ learning experience. He is a fervent proponent of the integration of technology into the learning and teaching process. He sees it as potential cost-cutter for the implementation of well proven active learning strategies.
Mr. Seck holds Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degrees in economics (currency and finance) from Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne. He earned a Master of Arts in economics and a Graduate Certificate in Federal Statistics from George Mason University. For several years , Mr. Seck has taught economics at NOVA the largest public educational institution in Virginia and the second-largest community college in the United States, and he has been teaching economics at John Abbott since 2014.

Arthur holds a B.B.A in Applied Economics from HEC Montreal, a Master of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a Master of Arts in Economics from Columbia University. He passed the comprehensive examinations of the PhD program at Columbia University but decided not to write his dissertation. Maybe one day, he will change his mind. Arthur wrote his master's thesis on the sovereign debt situation in Europe.
His research interests are: Fiscal Policy, Income Inequalities, Education, and Political Economy.
Born in France, Arthur Voegel has lived in many different countries (USA, France, Chile, United Kingdom and Canada). He loves to travel and discover new cultures, however, the only place he would call home is Montreal.

Nicola holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Political Science from the University of Ottawa, and a Master of Arts in International Affairs with a specialization in National and Subnational Aspects of Development from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. She graduated from the Honours Social Science Program at John Abbott College in 2001.
While in Ottawa, Nicola held various positions on Parliament Hill, though most of her career has been spent in the international non-profit sector. For 10 years she coordinated healthcare and education programs at the World Federation of Hemophilia where she contributed to the improvement of access to care and treatment for people with inherited bleeding disorders all over the world.
Nicola is teaching Modern Political Ideas and Quantitative Methods. She joined the Political Science department in 2017.

Professor Sotiron has been a member of John Abbott College’s Political Science Department since 2012. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Concordia University, as well as a Master’s in Political Science from UQAM; his thesis was on Hindu nationalism. He also serves as a member of the Methods committee of the College.
With regards to student life, Professor Sotiron is involved with the JAC Model UN programme as well as the annual inter-collegiate debate event hosted at the college. What Professor Sotiron enjoys most about teaching at JAC is fostering healthy debates in class by discussing political ideas with students.

I received my Ph.D. in political science from the Université de Montréal and my MSc in international relations from the London School of Economics. I am teaching introduction to politics, international politics, and political economy, as well as methodology courses. My main research interests lie in the interactions between domestic politics and international affairs, the impact of political violence on democratic institutions, terrorism and the rally-around-the-flag phenomenon. I previously worked for the European Commission on the transition of the East European countries and their integration to the European Union.

Lynda Gelston teaches political science and research methods at John Abbott College. She graduated with a Double Honours in Political Sociology from Concordia University and was supported by an SSHRC scholarship to complete her M.A. in Political Economy at the University of Toronto.
With about thirty years of teaching experience, Lynda enjoys developing instructional material and hosting active learning simulations in her political science classrooms. She is a faculty advisor for a John Abbott College student club, the Model United Nations, where students compete and host conferences of re-enacted historical and literary gatherings.
Just underway, Lynda is busy constructing a website for social science research with the Centre collégial de développement de matériel didactique (CCDMD). Up to a dozen people from pedagogical specialists, animators to media-wizards are helping her to do what she likes best – generating useful pedagogical material for students.
